Basic technics

1. Die-cut: Use sharp metal knives to cut out paper or cardboard in different shapes(as in making a cardboard box, or in making cutouts ofr pop-up books, usually on a letterpress cylinder machine)
2. Glossy lamination: Glossy plastic film used to cover the boards of a book cover or jacket ,box,etc(single side or double sides).
3. Matte lamination: Matte plastic film used to cover the boards of a book cover or jacket ,etc(single side or double sides)

5. Embossing: To press a mould on the underside of something so that the surface stands out in relief. Embossing applies pressure to the backside of paper stock to alter the surface, giving it a three dimensional or raised effect.
6. Debossing: Debossing applies pressure to the front side of paper stock forcing the material away or down from the paper surface. Debossing is not as commonly used as embossing.
7. Hot stamping /foil: (different color of foil, such as gold,black,red,silver,etc) Letters or decorations in different color(gold,red,silver,black,etc) leaf stamped onto the surface of the paper/paper board.
8. Varnishing: Shinny coating applied to book covers or jackets, to make them more durable (similar in appearance to lamination, but cheaper)
9. Saddle Stitch: Binding where the signature is stitched throught the middle of fold, usully with wire, usually for small books up to 96pages maximum
10. Hardcover Book: Version of a book with a cased binding (as opposed to paperback)
11. Perfect binding: Binding system used mainly for paperbacks, where the folds of paper at the back of the book block are cut off, and the cut ends of the pages are stuck into the binding case with special glue
12. Swen binding: Sheets of the block remain in their original form – connected in a folio in the course of the finishing work. Individual folios are sewn and glued. This guarantees double firmness. This kind of binding guarantees good openin
13. UV: Coating applied to paper/paper board to make them shiny and more durable,this type of varnish can be dried on machine under UV light. UV varnishing is cheaper than lamination, but does not have as glossy a finish

20. Flocking on paper: Flocking is the process of applying different types of fibers or materials that contain adhesive to other materials(such as flocking on paper).
21. Wrinkle: Small crease in paper caused by damp conditions which make the paper stretch
22. Wire-O binding: Trade mark for a method of binding using a spiral wire running through holes in the margin of the pages of a loose-leaf book/calendars,etc.
